Australian Banking 6 Finance magazine's list of Australia's most prominent and influential banking executives again features the foremost personalities from the majors, plus leaders of the most successful regional banks, investment banks and international banks. The past year has been a rewarding one for banks and bankers in Australia. Record profits, high revenues, diversification into areas apart from traditional banking, and overseas expansion--particularly into Asia--are a testament to the quality of Australian banking expertise. Following are 50 profiles of our best and brightest.

Greg Bartlett

Group executive, institutional and business banking, St.George Bank

Greg Bartlett was appointed as St.George Bank's group executive institutional and business banking in 1999 after roles as group treasurer and chief general manager, group treasury and capital markets.

He has been a member of the bank's executive management committee for 17 years and has more than three decades of experience in the financial services industry.

Michael Cameron

Group executive, retail banking services, Commonwealth Bank

Michael Cameron leads the Commonwealth Bank's retail banking services division, which is the bank's largest business division and meets the financial needs of personal customers seeking accessible and affordable banking and financial services.

Prior to this role. he was the bank's chief financial officer and group executive, financial and risk management, having joined the bank in November 2002 as deputy chief financial officer.

Before joining the Commonwealth Bank. Mr Cameron was chief operating officer with National Australia Bank's wealth management division And prior to joining NAB he had a distinguished career with Lend Lease. Barclays Bank and TNT Australia.

Kim Burke

Executive director and head of equity markets group, Macquarie Bank

Kim Burke has overall global responsibility for Macquarie Bank's equity markets group (EMG) activities, including origination and distribution of equity linked investment and risk management products for retail and wholesale investors globally; market making and principal trading in equities and equity derivatives; stock borrowing and lending and structured equity finance; as well as the bank's hedge fund business. Mr Burke joined the bank in the financial markets group in 1991. He joined the equity structured products division in 1992 and was promoted to associate director in 1994, division director in 1995 and executive director in 1997. In 1998 Mr Burke established EMG's South African business, in conjunction with Standard Bank of South Africa.

Michael Carapiet

Executive director and head of corporate finance, Macquarie Bank

Michael Carapiet is an executive director, executive committee member and joint head of Macquarie Bank's corporate finance businesses. He first joined Macquarie Bank in 1985 and has worked in the investment banking group since 1989. Macquarie has the largest corporate finance team in Australia and New Zealand, with almost 1,300 executives in 31 offices across 23 countries including the UK, Germany, France, Austria. US. Canada, UAE, South Africa and all major Asian markets.

David Cartwright

Group managing director, operations, technology and shared services, ANZ Banking Group

ANZ's chief executive officer, John McFarlane, announced the appointment of David Cartwright as group managing director, operations, technology and shared services on 21 February 2007.

Mr Cartwright will move from the United Kingdom to join ANZ over the next few months following the planned retirement of Mike Grime.

He joins ANZ from Intelligent Processing Solutions Limited (iPSL), where he was chief executive officer, iPSL is a joint venture created by Unisys, Lloyds TSB Bank, Barclays and HSBC that provides around 70 per cent of cheque processing services in the United Kingdom. Previously Mr Cartwright had a 22-year career in operations and technology at Barclays PLC.

Barbara Chapman

Group executive, people and group services, Commonwealth Bank

Barbara Chapman joined the Commonwealth Bank in July 2006. In her role as group executive, people and group services, she is responsible for the bank's people services and marketing and communications functions. Ms Chapman began her career with the group in 1994 as chief manager marketing in the New Zealand subsidiary, ASB, and was internally promoted to a newly created role of general manager marketing and human resources in 2000. In 2001 she was appointed as ASB's head of retail banking and marketing. In 2004 Ms Chapman moved into the role of managing director and chief executive officer of Sovereign Assurance, the group's New Zealand life insurance business.

Philip Chronican

Group executive, institutional bank, Westpac Banking Corporation

Philip Chronican was appointed group executive, institutional banking with Westpac in December 2005 and is responsible for Westpac's relationships with corporate, institutional and government clients in Australia and worldwide, as well as the business areas of financial markets, debt capital markets, specialised capital, structured investments and transactional banking. Mr Chronican has been with Westpac in a broad variety of positions in Australia and in New Zealand since 1982. His previous roles included business group chief financial officer roles in both retail and institutional banking, deputy CFO, then group chief financial officer from February 2001.
