Many of the traditional "defensive stocks," such as consumer staples, have failed as havens in this bear market.
Value stocks and funds that invest in them have outstripped growth stocks -- but so far this year, value stocks have merely broken even. One place to look for shelter may be stocks of pharmaceutical companies. Even in a recession, people aren't likely to cut their spending on medical care. What's more, drug companies hold patents -- which keeps them relatively insulated from the competitive pressures that affect the rest of the economy. ...
