Results of a recent survey suggest that shippers may be shifting from using transportation-based logistics-service providers to those that are more oriented toward warehousing and distribution.
That was one of the key findings of the fourth annual study of shippers that use third-party distribution services, sponsored by the University of Tennessee, third-party provider Exel Logistics, and consultants Ernst & Young. The study's authors--C. John Langley Jr. of the University of Tennessee, Brian F. Newton of Exel Logistics, and Gene Tyndall of Ernst & Young (now with Ryder Integrated Logistics)--surveyed 68 companies in such industries as automotive, chemical, consumer products, and retail.
