LP/Gas, March, 2003

The number of workplace injuries and illnesses has reached an all-time low, declining for the ninth consecutive year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

A total of 5.2 million injuries and illnesses were reported in private industry workplaces during 2001, a rate of 5.7 cases per 100 full-time workers.

The totals mean 500,000 fewer job-related injuries compared with 2000, when the case rate was 6.1. There was a 10 percent reduction in repeated trauma injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and other musculoskeletal disorders.
