The National Propane Gas Association is asking its members to help fight a proposed 98 percent increase in rates to use the Mid-America Pipeline (MAPL).

In recent years, MAPL has been locked in a hotly contested battle with several propane shippers and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), over a proposed linefill program that would have required shippers to pay additional fees to keep the line full of propane so LPG was available on demand. Although FERC nixed the linefill proposal, MAPL has sought additional rate increases--a 23 percent increase in March 2005 on MAPL's north of Conway, Kan., pipeline system and another one last March.
