Students cool to general practice over course of medical school.

MEDICAL students are less likely to choose general practice as a career at the end of their university training than they are before starting their education, according to a study of the first cohort of medical students at James Cook University in Queensland.

The students at the regional medical school were surveyed on their career aspirations at the beginning of their degree in 2001, with 37% initially choosing general practice. At graduation four years later, the proportion choosing general practice as a career option fell to 26%.
