WOMEN with a history of breast cancer have a 25% increased risk of developing a new primary cancer, according to a large international study.
But an Australian expert has warned that GPs should be alert, not alarmed, by the findings.
More than half a million women with primary breast cancer identified from 13 cancer registries worldwide, including Australia, were followed for second primary cancers between 1943 and 2000.
More than 31,000 women developed a second primary cancer.
