STATINS SAFE FOR BREASTS

STATIN use is not associated with increased risk of breast cancer but the jury is still out on whether the cholesterol-lowering drugs could have a role in preventing the disease, researchers say.

Previous studies had given mixed results, but prospective data from the Women's Health Initiative found no evidence of increased risk with statins over an average follow-up period of 6.7 years.

A 9% reduction in risk of breast cancer with statin use did not reach statistical significance, researchers said.
