THE claimed gastrointestinal advantages of COX-2 inhibitors have been cast into further doubt, with research suggesting an NSAID and proton pump inhibitor combination offers a greater reduction in risk of dyspepsia.
"Our data provide a strong clinical and economic rationale for substituting the NSAID plus PPI combination in lieu of coxibs in high-risk patients with arthritis," the authors of a meta-analysis comparing the two treatment options wrote in the American Journal of Medicine (May).
