WOMEN on long-term hormone replacement therapy should have their breast health and risk-benefit profile evaluated regularly, an expert says, with a study finding a significant increase in breast cancer risk after 20 years of unopposed oestrogen therapy.

For oestrogen or progesterone receptor-positive cancers, a significant increase in risk was observed after 15 years' treatment, according to findings from the Nurses' Health Study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine (8 May).
