No vicars for abortion counselling:AMA.

GPs will be offered a new Medicare item to counsel women considering an abortion, under a $60 million scheme agreed to by Federal Cabinet last week.

Pushed by Federal Health Minister Mr Tony Abbott after his failure to retain the power to approve abortion drug RU486 for use in Australia, the package also includes a 24-hour hotline for women seeking support.

GPs will be paid to provide counselling themselves or they will be able to refer patients to independent services - which could include those set up by church groups.
