A NEWtreatment for age related macular degeneration (AMD) promises to improve patients' vision, not just slow vision loss, a study suggests.
Early results of a phase III trial using intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (Lucentis) found patients treated with the drug improved their visual acuity, gaining an average of 11 letters on an eye chart.
This compared with patients using an alternative treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT) with IV verteporfin (Visudyne), who on average lost 9.5 letters.
