WHILE working in India, I accompanied a semiconscious patient with a subarachnoid haemorrhage on a flight to a neurosurgical clinic in Mumbai.

A small, fragile, bent old lady boarded the plane and asked me what was wrong with my patient. She asked if she could pray for him. I asked one of the patient's relatives, who happily agreed.
