Don't target self-prescribing

EDITOR Recent discussions have considered legislation to restrict doctors from self-prescribing ('GPs defend right to self-prescribe', 14 October). Self-prescribing must not be confused with self-treatment (a common error within the literature). This distinction is important.

Legislation to restrict self-prescribing cannot alter self-treatment. It is simplistic to believe that preventing self-prescribing will reduce physician impairment. There is no evidence that restricting self-prescribing will reduce impairment and there are many ...
