BREACHES of patient privacy by doctors are often inadvertent, but when they happen it can take a long time to deal with the complaint.

Since December 2001, patients have had the right to access their health information under the Federal Privacy Act. A breach of a patient's privacy usually happens because the doctor did not seek consent from the patient to release information to a third party.
