GOVERNMENT funding of universal HPV immunisation is the only way of ensuring the vaccine protects as many women as possible from cervical cancer, an expert says.

The newly developed HPV vaccine was likely to be "the most expensive we have had yet", said adolescent physician Dr Rachel Skinner, lead investigator of the international HPV vaccine trials in WA.
