IN the early 1970s Japanese cars were dismissed as copycat tin cans. Look at them now.

South Korean cars began appearing on Australian roads in early 1986, brought in by the Perth-based Bond Motor Company. The styling was drab, the build quality a lottery and the paint finish damn ordinary. The cars were not a great drive. We resisted the temptation to laugh out loud.

But like the Japanese, the Koreans have turned their clumsy earlier efforts into a respected and worthwhile assault on the local market.
