THE 2% increase in the MBS this month has caused disappointment among GP groups. But spare a thought for the non-VR GPs. While the rise will bring the rebate for a level B consultation to $31.45, non-VR GPs have to make do with only $21.

The differential between the two groups is even greater when practice expenses are taken into account.

An average VR bulk-billing GP seeing 5000 patients a year will gross about $157,000 and pay about 40% in practice costs, or $63,000, taking home $94,000 before tax.
