QUALITY of life can improve in HIV-infected patients treated with lipostructure to correct facial lipoatrophy, a study has found.
Lipoatrophy, caused by highly active antiretroviral therapy, is characterised by loss of subcutaneous fat from the face and increased deposition of fat on the buttocks and abdomen.
It gives patients a cachectic appearance that can stigmatise them and damage their self-esteem.
