HAEMOGLOBIN concentrations at both the upper and lower end of normal are independently associated with increased mortality in the elderly, a study shows.

People over 65 years whose haemoglobin levels were in the bottom 20% of the cohort had the highest risk of dying over 11 years' follow-up, the observational study found (Archives of Internal Medicine, 24 October).

The association remained after adjustment for confounding factors, the researchers said, raising the possibility of a causal relationship.
