A LEADING government pharmacist has defended the right of doctors to self-prescribe, despite attempts by some medical boards to stamp out the practice.
NSW Health's chief pharmacist Mr John Lumby said: 'If it is a mind-altering drug, I think self-prescribing is not on, but for blood pressure medication, antibiotics, that sort of thing, I don't think there is a problem with it.'
His comments follow a survey of 224 GP registrars (Australian Docto r, 14 October) that found almost half (49%) were happy to self-prescribe.
