MATCHING the supply of doctors with the national need is a difficult task for any country, and Australia has been failing for a long time.
Twenty years ago the Federal Government decided the country had too many doctors, so it began to restrict supply. This situation prevailed until recently, when it became clear the pendulum had swung the other way and there was a serious shortage of doctors, especially GPs. Now the Productivity Commission is conducting an inquiry into the whole health workforce.
