THERE are no direct flights from Adelaide to the Galapagos Islands. I travelled via Sydney, Los Angeles, San Jose (Costa Rica) and Quito (Ecuador) before taking my final flight to these enchanting islands, more than 900km west of the Ecuadorian coast.

I was joining an eco-tour to cruise the islands with my older brother -- an evolutionary biologist -- and a group of alumni from his university.

Filled with dreams of seeing the unique fauna of these isolated islands, my adrenaline was pumping even before I touched the ground.
