I RECALL a family holiday from my childhood. I was seven years old and was seated at the hotel's breakfast table with my parents and my older brother.

I had ordered fried eggs for breakfast. However, when the waitress put the plate in front of me I noticed something next to the eggs that looked like thin, crisp meat and was the source of a wonderful aroma.

My curiosity was further aroused when my father said: "That's bacon, son. We don't eat bacon." He then lifted the bacon off my plate and asked the waitress to take it back.
