MJA Gastroscopy is being overused in the investigation of reflux symptoms, placing added pressure on colonoscopy services needed under the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, an eminent Australian gastroenterologist says.
Associate Professor Anne Duggan, senior staff specialist at John Hunter Hospital in NSW, said most patients with reflux did not require gastroscopy and could be managed effectively with lifestyle modifications such as losing weight, smoking cessation and medication.
