NEJM Clomiphene is three times more effective than metformin at achieving a live birth for infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and should be used as first-line treatment, according to a landmark study that is dividing Australian experts.

The controversial finding -- from the largest study to date comparing the fertility effects of six months of treatment with clomiphene citrate, extended-release metformin or combination therapy using both drugs -- has turned the tables on previous research.
