SMARTCARD CLAIM DENIED

CLAIMS that people under 18 will be denied the billion-dollar Smartcard, leaving them struggling to access bulk-billed medical services, have been rubbished by the Federal Government.

The AMA warned that the draft plan for the system -- due in 2008 -- would mean that 16- and 17-year-olds would have to pay cash up-front for any consultation because they would be denied the card.

But last week former Federal Human Services Minister Mr Joe Hockey said the AMA "got it wrong".
