ABOUT 10 years ago Dr Vicki Payne was leaving the home of a patient after a worrying visit when, in a moment of distraction, she was run over by a car.

While Dr Payne has practised for 45 years, she says this accident -- which led to serious injuries and severe, chronic pain -- has been an important influence in her attitude towards medicine.

"I have as a result of this developed a deep understanding of my patients with chronic pain and our limitations in treatment at this time," she says.
