BMJ Long-term dietary sodium reduction can decrease cardiovascular events by one-quarter, a world-first study shows.
The findings have added weight to expert recommendations for the food industry to reduce the amount of salt added to food.
US researchers said although reducing salt intake had been shown to lower blood pressure, their research filled a knowledge gap by demonstrating that dietary sodium reduction of about one-half could also cut cardiovascular morbidity by 25% and cardiovascular mortality by 20%.
