Benefit rule 'disadvantages rural GPs'.

GP leaders are calling for a review of a Medicare rule that prevents GPs from claiming benefits for treating a practice partner or their children, saying the restriction could disadvantage doctors in rural areas.

According to paragraph 13.4 of the Medicare Benefits Schedule Book's explanatory notes, a rebate cannot be claimed when GPs treat their 'dependants, practice partner or practice partner's dependants' unless a 'legally enforceable debt' is incurred.

GPs who wish to claim a rebate must refer the case to Medicare Australia for assessment.
