HISTORY
THE word herpes is derived from the Greek word meaning 'to creep'. Oral herpes was first described in AD100 by the Roman physician Herodotus, but it was not until 1736 that the French physician Jean Astruc gave what is considered to be the earliest clinical description of genital herpes.
