A GP has been fined $20,000 and ordered to attend ethics classes for providing three international students with false medical certificates in a bid to stop them being deported.

Sydney GP Dr Rupasenan Karalasingham, 43, admitted before the Medical Tribunal of NSW to falsifying medical certificates and misleading officers from the Department of Immigration.

The three university students risked losing their visas if they failed to maintain an 80% attendance rate at university and did not have a medical certificate to explain their absence.
