FEMALE CIRCUMCISION BANNED

ERITREA The Eritrean Government has banned female circumcision, saying that it threatens the lives of women. Women's rights groups in Eritrea say about 90% of women in the north African country have had the painful procedure. Girls who remain uncircumcised are regarded as less desirable for marriage. The government has now said that anyone found involved in promoting or providing the procedure will face fines and imprisonment.
