The media's obsession with outback medicine does general practice few favours
THE Australian outback is a movie star in its own right, one whose presence can transform an otherwise well-trodden plot into an apparently original crowd-pleaser and suffuse the entire enterprise with a grand and epic quality.
One of the best examples of this is the TV series The Flying Doctors . After an initial commission of six one-hour dramas, the series was a runaway success and a further 221 episodes were made, screened in more than 50 countries.
