COUNTRIES with high rates of heterosexual HIV transmission should urgently upscale their efforts to circumcise men, UN health agencies urge.

The recommendation -- made at a European meeting of international experts -- follows three randomised controlled African trials suggesting circumcision can reduce the risk of contracting HIV by 60% among heterosexual men.

The meeting heard modelling studies had shown male circumcision in sub-Saharan Africa could prevent 5.7 million new cases of infection and three million deaths over 20 years.
