NEJM Patients with bipolar disorder are commonly misdiagnosed with depression and should be treated with mood stabilisers not antidepressants, an Australian expert warns, in light of a new study.

The US study of 370 patients with bipolar disorder showed that adding an antidepressant to the treatment of depression associated with bipolar disorder offered no benefit over treatment with mood stabilisers alone.
