Infant meningitis toll hits teens.

MORE than one-quarter of high-school students who had meningitis in infancy fail to reach major educational milestones in high school, despite many showing no signs of disability as young children, a study finds.

The UK researchers said their study -- of 461 survivors and 289 controls -- was the first to assess the impact of bacterial meningitis in the first year of life on the educational achievements of a large national cohort of 16-year-olds.
