Electronic stethoscopes turn up the volume.

TWO brands of electronic stethoscope are readily available in Australia-- the Littmann and Welch Allyn.

The Littmann 3000 claims to amplify by up to 18 times the volume of a conventional stethoscope. It has a single, slightly convex, 5cm diaphragm for use on both adults and children.

A switch allows volume adjustment and alternating between bell and diaphragm settings. Its ambient noise-reduction technology claims to reduce unwanted noise by 75%. However, this benefit is reduced if part of the sensor is not ...
