GENERAL practice could turn its back on the new Medicare electronic billing system, after practice managers claimed the multi-million-dollar scheme was an "absolute nightmare" to operate.

The revamped claiming system -- due to be rolled out in four months -- will use the EFTPOS network to allow privately billed patients to receive their Medicare rebate instantly into their bank account.
