Risk factors for benign ovarian tumours identified.

AUSTRALIAN researchers have identified potentially modifiable risk factors for benign ovarian tumours and suggest the risk could be reduced by avoiding smoking and obesity.

The researchers estimated that 20% of all benign mucinous tumours could be attributed to smoking and 17% of benign serous tumours to obesity.

Current smoking conferred a threefold increased risk of benign mucinous tumours and doubled the risk of benign serous tumours, they said.

They also identified a trend for increased risk with increased smoking.
