"A MATTER of some importance." This was the way the magistrate referred to the case of Dr Khulod Maarouf-Hassan as he addressed the Hassan family at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 30 January 2007. Dr Maarouf-Hassan was stabbed to death in her practice on 16 June 2006.

While it is true that words are incompetent when it comes to describing inconsolable grief, this response was perceived as a gross understatement by those present at the hearing.
