Post-mortem GPs need better pay and training.

GP leaders are calling for better training and financial support for rural doctors who conduct post-mortems, after a media outcry over inadequate services in NSW.

Media reports said a shortage of GPs prepared to conduct autopsies had led to bodies being transported across the state in unrefrigerated vans, before being returned in an unrecognisable state to grieving relatives.

A NSW Health spokeswoman acknowledged that many GPs who had conducted post-mortems in rural areas had either stopped or retired.
