WHEN 13-year-old Frank 'Maurie' Cave left school during the Great Depression he could not have guessed that one day he would be one of Australia's most honoured GPs.
Dr Cave's work for his Rockhampton community last week earned him the Order of Australia.
After four decades in general practice and 30 years with the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, the 84-year-old GP is still active in medicine, working part time at the local prison and one day a week at a methadone clinic.
And he still makes house calls.
