THE real reason spring bulbs always come in packets with spectacular photographs of flowers is because the bulbs inside look so boring. Most people wouldn't be buying these depressing, shrivelled things unless they could see the end reward, and that's what those seductive pictures are all about.

On sale now are bulbs, corms and tubers galore. They are nothing more than food storage organs so certain plants can survive through long periods of dormancy.
