PULSE oximeters are in constant use in emergency departments. They calculate the pulse rate and arterial oxygen saturation* by measuring the absorption of red and infrared light by arterial blood, usually through the fingernail.

Measuring oxygen saturation is useful in settings such as:

* Asthma, especially if the patient is unable to use a peak flow meter.

* COPD exacerbations.

* Possible atelectasis/lower respiratory tract infection.

* Hyperventilation, as a clear display to the patient of adequate blood oxygenation.
