THERE is something comforting about being read to by an adult, I suppose because it takes us back to childhood and the delights of listening to bedtime stories.

That's why one of the most constructive things I did to escape general practice last year was to attend Adelaide Writers' Week.

Far from being lulled to sleep by the readings, I was awakened to ideas and images. Authors who are old favourites or new literary discoveries await you. There is the opportunity to meet old friends or make new acquaintances among the audience. You may even hobnob ...
