IN cool and temperate districts the ultimate nightmare weed is oxalis. Known as wood sorrel or shamrock, it has innocent-looking, bright-green, clover-like leaves. Don't be fooled.

There are 800 oxalis species of which about a dozen are invasive weeds. They include a creeping, yellow-flowered form that infests lawns, and a mauve- or yellow-flowered bulbous species that thrives in cultivated soil.
