The GP shortage is causing some registrars to overestimate their worth.
REGISTRARS approaching the end of their training are in the box seat when it comes to negotiating income, with some desperate rural towns reportedly offering $300,000 a year to secure a GP.
But as one rural GP recently discovered, workforce shortages don't mean new fellows can expect a blank cheque. Rather than meet the GP's pay demands, a practice walked away from negotiations. The GP wanted tens of thousands of dollars more than what the average GP in the area was earning.
