PATIENTS should not drink alcohol while using the insomnia drug zolpidem (Stilnox), strengthened safety warnings will advise.

The upgraded caution follows a recent Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee bulletin reporting bizarre and distressing neurological and psychiatric reactions in patients using the drug.

Cases -- which have attracted wide media coverage -- included patients found binge eating while asleep and incidents of sleep-driving.
