IT all started with The Kite Runner , the novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It was such a devastating book that I wanted a break from reading.

Luckily, while in the BBC shop in London, I found a CD set of the first series of the 1950s radio program Journey into Space . It cost [pounds sterling]70 ($A170). I tried very hard to walk away, and did several times, but in the end I bought it.

Nobody in Australia seems to know about Journey into Space . I don't think it was on Aussie radio. At lunch with some New Zealanders, they all went ...
